How to make subtitles for a video
Subtitles make a video easy to follow with the sound off, which is how most people watch on their phones. Subwave times each line with one key, then you type the words.
Make them in five steps
- Open just the video in Subwave: new, empty subtitles start for it.
- Play with Space. When someone starts to speak, hold T, and let go when they stop. A line appears for that stretch. Do it for each phrase.
- Type the words. Click the first line, type what is said, then Ctrl+Enter for the next.
- Check : lines too fast to read, or too long for one line, are listed with a fix.
- Save with Ctrl+S. Name it like the video, with the language:
talk.en.srt.
Tips
- Prefer the mouse? Drag on an empty stretch of the timeline above the waveform to make a line there.
- Two lines of about 40 characters at most, on screen for at least a second: Subwave checks both.
- [ and ] set the selected line's start and end at the playhead.
